I was already having a crazy week. I really should say month. I was not needed anything else to add to my rising stress level.

I went to the Veterans Service Agency in Little Italy... when I first walked up the place looked a little sketchy, it was right next to the train tracks, the area smelled like urine, and the building was looking old and not kept up. Inside was a lot better. After getting certified copies of my DD-214, I made my way to a little restaurant and had my first cannoli, total cost $3.75. After watching Cake Boss on TLC I wanted to try one. I wish I remember the name of the restaurant. I will be back in Little Italy on Saturday, I will have to see. So for my first cannoli, I must say it was very good, rich, smooth and creamy. It will be a nice treat every once and a while.

When I got home I started the task of starting my unemployment claim. 70 calls to the EDD to get a standard recording or one that gives you hope until the end where it says due to the high call volume please call again....

So first thing tomorrow morning will be a phone call to the EDD in hopes that I get through.

Monday I went to the beach, it was kinda nice not having to answer phones, check my email, file papers, copy, fax, type and all the day to day activities of working in an office.

Tuesday I did try for a short ride around Fiesta Island. I was not trying to push it or try to hard. My hip is still sore from dislocating it a couple weeks ago.

With everything I am going to take it one day at a time, go with the flow, and really try to enjoy my time off

juky 2009

Well I had decided to stop writing my blog after the ride last year, but I am back... I am now getting back to my daily life, before I started all this riding the bike. The big difference in my life pre riding to now, is the job change. I am working alot more now that I am out of the Navy, but I am loving my job. But my new job is alot less stressful. I love getting up in the morning and going into work. I have alot to tell and alot of pictures to share. I am going to do a day by day account, and write down everything I remember. It may be all over the place, but I will do my best for you all.

Drum Roll Please....

The winner was announced this morning... Mike Henderson. Mike truly deserves this title. What an amazing man he is. He had everything in him that the CAF stands for. The best person did win today. It was a nerve wrecking show, and I was able to keep my cool until the end. When Mike gave me $4,000 to join the riders in San Francisco this Friday. As soon as he said he was going to give me the funds, I lost it and the tears just started coming. I was speechless and had to give Mike a hug. Thank you to The Scott and BR Show for giving me this opportunity and for a $5,000 scholarship. And to Corky's Pest Control for a $1,000 donation.

Waiting ...

Tonight cannot seem to go by fast enough. Tomorrow morning, myself, Mike, Kristine, Jeffery, and Jim will be joining Scott and BR in there studio for the final cut. 20 weeks ago 30 of us started on a journey far bigger then we ever imagined. And tonight as I lay here, a million things are running through my head. From the beginning I would say that I was going to win, but for me I say that with all. In the truth of it, I never thought I would still be here. The judges seen something in me, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for giving he this opportunity. I thought it would be Mike and Brent. Brent was cut, but was able to fundraise his $10,000. Mike, through plenty of hard work has been able to raise $10,000 also. And after reading his blog, he stated that if he wins, he is going to use his $10,000 and give it to those who are still needing some money. Mike is so wonderful. I first met him in the La Mesa Trek Store where he would volunteer.
I am filled with so much emotion. We have no idea of how tomorrow is going to play out. My heart is pounding 90 miles an hour right now in anticipation of it all. How will I ever sleep tonight. I have been trying to get my bike ready this evening and get some packing started. I need to save some of it for last minute. Tomorrow, is going to be busy regardless.

Tuesday nights are one of my favorite nights during the week... I have been taking figure skating lessons on Tuesday nights since January 2008. It all started with a trip home for the holidays and my number one fan, she said how cool it would be if I could take lessons out in San Diego. Being that I love her so much, I thought why not. Patsy, she is quite the little girl. Well now she is a teenager and a freshman in high school. From the very start, she followed me around and was my side kick. Most kids would hate having their baby sister or brother want to be with them 24/7. But I have loved having her there. And I know the first chance she gets, she will be calling me to see how things went for me. I know that alot of people are wondering the same thing. After figure skating I have a little girl, who I have to pay a visit to. My little friend Samantha, is turning 2 tomorrow. I have the chance to take another private lesson with my coach Chea, but I don't know if I am going to yet.

Am I ready to make this trip down the coast? Is my endometriosis and fibromyalgia going to allow my body to? Is my health strong enough for this? Are the fires going on going to effect us? What is the weather going to be like? Too hot, too cold? Am I going to forget something? One reveled on Sundays ride that underwear was forgotten by someone on last years ride. Did I do enough to show the judges and the CAF that I really want this? How was my attitude? Did I put forth enough effort? Am I going to regret not raising money for myself, or was it better to help out others first? From the beginning we have not known how the judges decided to cut people from the contest. Will all be known tomorrow or will their secrets be safe for another year?

Well its rounding near 10pm. I am going to put on a movie in hopes that will help me to fall asleep. Good night all and I will blog the next chance I get.

Final Two

This morning Scott announced on air that tomorrow morning the final two radio contestants will be in studio for the final cut.
If you are up at 630 am tune into xx1090 and listen live...

Bitter-Sweet

Today marked our last training ride for the QMDC. What an amazing 20 weeks I have gone through. I have felt so many emotions , especially in these past couple of weeks. I signed up on to win my spot on the QMDC, on a whim. From the start I had hoped (along with everyone else) I want to be the one they pick, I WANT TO WIN! To my surprise I have made it to the final two. Mike Henderson, a person who is so wonderful is also standing with me. Over the next few days the winner of the Scott and BR Show, winner will be announced. I may or may not go. I am prepared to go. Something I have learned in the Navy is better to be ready and not do something, then not be ready and have to do something. If I do not win, I will be okay, I will be disappointed but the judges are the one who picks the one who they feel deserves this the most. What a hard decision they have to make. I would hate to be in their shoes. I have the time off work and am willing to do support on the ride too.
Taking part in the training could not have come at a better time in my life... I had been struggling for sometime prior to the start of that first training ride on June 8Th. My health was not good. I was told I was no longer able to run, for I will further damage my back and hips. Running had been my therapy, I was just getting into doing local races, trying to participate in one a month. I was trying to get things in order to secure a job, for I was having to leave the military because of my health problems. The Navy had been all I had known for 8 years. How would I adjust. What would I do for work? I was so lost and stressed.

Right from the start I was open with my group about my health issues, and everybody was still welcoming towards me. I have a hard time meeting new people let alone, letting them into my bubble. I have had too many times in the past where people say if you never need any help don't hesitate to call, and the times I call they are not there. Its frustrating and hard. Who wants to put up with someone who doesn't feel good every day. I get tired of hearing myself say that I don't feel good. Having to cancel plans last minute or go home early. Its hard. And the people I do have in my life that are there for me they are a blessing. But Group 4 and mostly everyone else has been wonderful towards me.

I rode with Group 4, for the training. With Hooter and Diane as my ride leaders. And I thank Hooter for his "Nina, we have to talk..." Group 4 showed me that it was okay to stop and not ride when I needed to. Just to rest and on the way back if I am feeling better, I can get back on the bike. One ride where I was in tears, from being in so much pain. And how everyone was concerned, day following text messages, phone calls, and emails, of my group making sure I am okay. Before, I would torture my body, I would not stop. I would push through the pain and end up unable to walk for a few days following. I felt that my body was failing me, and I was not going to let it. I whole hearted thank Group 4... Hooter, Diane, Julie, Dr. Bob, Julie S, Jack, Sandy, Francesca, Cindy, Terri, Tina(Sag-a-licious), Brent, Carma, and I know I am probably missing a couple of names. Thank you all. I could not have gone through this without you all. You all are amazing people and I have enjoyed every mile spent with you all. I hope that down the road, we all can get together and ride.

Learning about the CAF, is one thing, but I was able to see what it can do for people. And I love talking about riding my bike and what I have been doing. Even though I did not raise $10,000 for myself to secure my spot, if I do not get the winning spot. Helping others raise their money, was what I thought was the best for me during this time period. I love helping anyway I can. Because every little bit helps. Shortly after we started training, I got a message on myspace from a guy who lost both legs and his right arm in a car accident. He was looking to moving out here to San Diego, and he just asked me a simple question of "Do you know any amputee athletes?" Without hesitation I messaged him right back and told him what I was doing and that I will help out anyway possible. The following Sunday, I was talking to Steve a radio contestant, and told him about the myspace message. He said you need to tell Jeffery. We went to Jeffery, Steve introduced me to him and I told Jeffery about the message. I was given contact info to pass on. As soon as I got home I messaged the guy and passed the info on. I have not heard from him for some time. I do message him to see how he is. He was having problems finding suitable housing for him to rent out here. I hope that everything works out so that he is able to move out here and do what he loves to do, play sports. Spreading the word of the CAF, and showing someone where they can look to get the information is so rewarding. Just telling someone that there is an organization out there that is willing to help someone do what they love to do. What better thing to witness the glimmer of hope that shows in their eyes that they are going to have a second chance at doing what they love.

I don't know how the next few days are going to play out for the final two radio contestants, but I will give you all an update when I hear something. Thank you all for your support throughout the whole experience, its something that will last with me for my lifetime.

A must read for any cyclist...

My roommate went out with friends and one of them is a writer and an avid cyclist. I have been trying to ride my bike to work once a week. I talked with my boss, so she knew my plans, just in case I had errands to go do. On Tuesday before figure skating, I went to Trek and bought some new arm warmers and the fancy legwarmers, some new lights for my bike and full fingered gloves. I made my way to figure skating and then had a private lesson. I get home get everything ready for my ride in. I found a new use for my gold Navy PT shirts... Wear them when its dark and I riding. Wednesday morning comes around and I leave at 5am, so I have enough time to get to work, get fresh, and listen to the radio contest cuts.

The ride is was going wonderful. Until I was on Cleveland Ave, by the base. I was in the left lane for I was needing to turn left, Some jerk came speeding past me and just barely hit me. And I swerved to avoid being a pancake, My tires got stuck in the train tracks, and I went down. Instant tears. This other truck pulls up and the lady is freaking out. She was wanting to call 911, if I needed anything. I told her I was fine, just needed to put my chain on and call someone to pick me up. She stayed so I could use her headlights to put my chain back on. I tried calling one of my friends, no answer. Well I could sit here and wait, start walking, or ride the mile more to work. So I cried to work. My left hip and wrist were killing me. I was hoping nothing is broken. I get to my office, I had 30 minutes before the QMDC segment on the radio. I go over to Wal-mart, to get an ice pack and ace bandage. I am still in my spandex. I was not giving a care. I hurry up. My mom is calling me, she is so nervous about talking on the radio. I told her its just like talking on the phone.

I get back to the office at 630.... just in time. I put the ice pack in the freezer to make it cold. I freshen up and wrap me wrist. I then look at my hip... its oh so pretty... See the picture above.

Finally the QMDC segment came on... Scott talked about how he got this idea to have someone speak on our behalf. I chose my mom, who knows me better then her. Scott said that this "Navy Guy" emailed him because during one show Scott talked about my decisions not to do the physical fundraising. And thsi guy emailed Scott tell him about what I had wrote in my blog about it and other things that he has noticed that I have been doing. My mind was all over the place. Who the heck is this guy. I never asked anyone to email or call the radio station on my behalf. My nerve level just went through the roof.

The first person to talk was my mom. She did so awesome. You could not tell that she was nervous at all. Mike had Todd, a former radio contestant speak for him. Carl had Brent aka Cowboy, talk for him. And Scott had his wife. Everyone did such an amazing job speaking for their person. Everyone drove a hard bargin. I was starting to think that I was gone. Scott said that the judges were standing by listening, and would be sending the email with the two who get cut. A few minutes later, which seemed like hours, the "You've got mail" came over the air waves. I was getting nervous, thinking this is it, I am gone. Scott said the two people who are moving on, are Mike and Nina. I was so shocked I almost choked on my Lucky Charms. OMG I am still in. I was like did I hear him right... A few minutes later i got an email from Diane, one of my ride leaders say congrats, so I knew that what I heard was true.

So now I am part of the final two. I was just breathe Nina. Also the final two were being invited to go ride the San Diego part of the Tour De Califorina. A fully supported ride from Qualcomm's Jeff Jacobs and USA Cycling Team.

Back to San Diego

Here is me sitting in Newark Airport waiting to catch my plane back to San Diego

Wednesday...

This past Wednesday was a cut day for The Scott and BR Cycling Team. My plane landed in Buffalo about 845am. My Mommie was there waiting for me to come through the gate as she always does. We rush to get my suitcase and I am trying to fumble with my laptop to listen to the radio show. To my luck, I have a MACbook and I was going to have to download something. So my mom and I rush to my Step Dad's shop. We call him along the way to listen on the computer. We get there about 930am. I was hoping we didn't miss it. So there is my mom, my step dad, and I all standing around his computer waiting. Finally Scott starts talking about the QMDC and the cut. Well Scott said that they were going to call the person. And when he said that my step dad's office phone started to ring. We started laughing. I checked my cell phone, to make sure they weren't trying to call me. The phone was out of service or the number changed. Scott talked about how I decided not to talk my $5,000 scholarship. My thinking behind it is its totally optional. I would rather help those who are already raising the money, with doing what I can to help them. Whether it be putting fliers on cars and handing them out. Going to their dinners, taking part in a singles auction. I would rather see that money go to those who have been working so hard for many months. To be honest, I am positive that I would not have been able to raise the additional $5,000 that I would have needed to secure my place in the QMDC. That is allot of money to get in not allot of time. My goal is to raise the full $10,000 to secure my spot on the QMDC for 2009. So Scott and BR tried a few more times in getting in contact with the person that was cut. Scott said that it was a guy who was to be cut, so I was safe this week. Now for the twist... since the person in question to be cut was not spoken to, there was no cut made... Does this mean that two cuts will take place again next week or was this a staged plan to build the suspense? I wonder...

Waiting on Wednesday...

Monday night Kristine E. called to say there was no cuts on Tuesday, it was going to be Wednesday. Wait Wednesday... I am suppose to be on the red eye Tuesday to New York. What the heck am I going to do...
My plane lands at 815am cuts are announced around 640am... Nina, hello time difference. New York is 3 hours ahead of San Diego. So I have come up with a plan in hopes to hear who we have to say by too. And that it will be announced around the usual 640am time. My plane lands in Buffalo at 815 am. As soon as I get off the plane I am going to get my laptop out and go to www.thescottandbrshow.com and listen live. Which will make it only make in the 5 o'clock hour. Then collect all the junk I have taken on the plane with me, and meet my stepdad down in the baggage claim. Trying not to drop my laptop and juggle everything on the way. I would be in tears if I drop my laptop.

Right now as I blog, I am sitting in the San Diego airport at gate 35. See the above picture. Like the tan lines from the back to back century I completed. I still have 45 minutes before I board the plane.

Well I am having to pack up to board the plane... I will write more soon

Pictures From My First Back to Back Centuries (and first ever century)

Here are nost of the pictures I have from our long training of back to back centuries. I am learning first hand how hard it is to juggle life outside of the military. Friends ask me what it is like to be out of the military now. I tell them that hourly pay is alot different then salary. You have to work to get paid. As the military every two weeks, if you were at work or not, you get paid. If you want time off, you must plan it right.
Yesterday I got the chance from my boss to attend a S.A.M.E. meeting up in Port Hueneme, CA. I was to dress like a business professional. That means every girls favotire word SHOPPING! So I ended finding this really cute charcoal gray pencil skirt with pink (of course) pinstrips and pink top from Express. And at Macys I found this killer pair of heels to match. Enough with that, on to the contest...
There are now four. October 7 the winner will be announced. I am nervous. I made the decision not to raise money on my own, but to help out other people who are fundraising. I have gone to dinners, was auctioned off at a singles auction. I went for $185, and busted a shoe. For some reason every trip to downtown, I end up walking back to the car barefoot. I have been passing out flyers for many people. I used to be annoyed by those who would leave flyers under your car wiper blade. But I can no longer say anything, for that is what I have been doing. I work across the street from a Wal-Mart shopping center. Plenty of cars all day long.
I do have some pictures to post with me and the immunity pump... I call him Steve, and some of his adventures with me.
This weekend is going to be the most challenging ride to date. Back to back centuires. After going to the pizza port and some talking with the other riders there, I was convinced to do it. I have to do some crunching to get things done before heading to New York for a couple days to see my family.

Pictures

http://www.duck-off.com/mdc2008.html

Thank you to fearless leader Diane Brown and her camera skills here are some more pictures.
YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even More PIctures....

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238851256359744354" style="DISPLAY: block; Monday working and then driving up to Port Hueneme for a Design Meeting to be held on Tuesday. Tuesday having the meeting and then driving home. I Ended up missing figure skating. I was bummed. And this week the rink is closed... boo. The ice is being resurfaced. A much needed thing at the skating rinks. I went to spin class on Wednesday. I had used clipins on the spin bike and did I feel uncoordinted. I probably looked like I never used clipins before. The ones I use on my bike are PINK (of course) speed plays. And I using shimanos for the spin bike. I can move my ankles one way on speed plays, and not the same in the shimanos. SO my feet kept coming out. I hope this wednesday I will be a little better.
Thursday i was able to make it to the training ride. Mari, our wonderful coach decided on time trials on Torrey Pine Hill. Hills, not too much my favorite, but I am getting used to them. My first ride up it was 9 minutes 9 seconds. The second trip up I rode with Sandy and it was 12 something. Sandy is so amazing. I look forward to talking with her every week. She has a little tattoo of the ironman. I am wanting to do an ironman. But will my health allow me to do it. I have no clue. I have no clue how each hour will be. One minute I can be feeling great, with a pain level that is tolerable. And then 5 minutes later I want to cry becuase I am so much pain, I can't even stand up. Its great for the dating life. I will add some more insight on it later.
Sandy has some fundraisers lined up for september. One on September 7th at The Barrel Room in Rancho Bernardo. With the flyer she has put together, you can go eat and 20% will go to the CAF. I have never ate there but September 7th will be my first time, which I am sure it will be amazing. An amazing meal to help out an amazing orginzation. If you want a flyer, post a comment to me with your email address and I will send it to you. Once I get the details of her second fundrasier which will be a fashion show, I will tell everyone about it.
My Friday was a girls night with dinner and a movie. House Bunny, very funny. Guys you probably wont like it. But Sunday I saw Step Brothers, very funny too.
Sundays Training Ride... Now I am getting caught up with my week.
The immunity pump challenge... We had 7 radio contestants present. Scott was there to return the pump and not ride. After voting on allowing him to do the challenge even though he was not riding Jim (last years radio contestant winner) explained the challenge. He had 7 cards. Ah my favorite number. And one card said immunity. What we were hoping was we get that card we get the pump. Nope we were wrong! Whoever gets the immunity card has to give it to someone. So we control the fate of one rider this week. I quickly decided one who I would pick if by chance I get the immunity card. Jim handed out the cards to us and we all got to look. And to my surprise I had the immunity card. Right away I gave it to MOMO. The only other female in the contest. Gotta try to keep the girls in. I know that she was happy to get it. The pump is really needing a womans touch to it too. After some annoucements we headed on the ride
I have been not looking at the ride sheets. I find if I do, I can end up psyching myself out. We ended up adding some distance to a ride we did in the first month of training. Riding up Scripps Poway Parkway. My first time up it... SUCKED. I WAS MISERABLE. and in alot of pain... wanted to cry it was so bad. Huge Thank you to BOB and Julie, who waited for me and rode the last part of the hill. This Sunday was a lot better. I was able to go up Scripps Poway Parkway alto easier then the first time. There was some pain, but alot better. I met up with this guy who was riding and we talked about halfway up the hill. Which was good to keep my mind of the ride and the heat. Once getting to the top of the hill and the SAG, it felt awesome to have completed that hill.
A good number of people turned and headed back from here, some radio contestants did too, it was sad to see everyone all go. But for various reasons they had to go. You all were missed. We then turned right out of the sag stop and came up on iron mountain. A place my roomie Jeanna likes to hike up. I have yet to go. We went through some breath taking views and our group was split up. I was riding with Bob and Julie. We stopped at one point to take in the view for a moment. I will attach the picture soon. And we went through some crazy, fun, but scary downhills. I was running low on water, it was hot, mentally tiring, and physically. Finally our SAG-A-LICIOUS TINA was there again for us. we refueled and headed home. Brent and I rode together and Diane caught up with us after Sandy met up with her husband. I had a little spill, but recovered. I caught a part of the bike lane that had some really uneven road. I some how skinned my left elbow a little and a few little bruises. How no clue. I think I startled Brent a little... SORRY BRENT I DIDNT MEAN TO. I had no intentions of playing in traffic. Finally we made it back to Fletcher Cove... I put my bike in the rack and headed home. I was done, so I thought. I went home showered and met up with friends to see Step Brother. Going shopping and then to dinner. Passing out cold for about 30 minutes on my friends couch. I then went home and went to bed.
Which brings me to monday. After workign 10 hours today, I am sitting here at the computer passing the time for tomorrow someone else is going to have to be kicked out of the radio contest. Its rounding 10pm and I am getting up early tomorrow. I have to get ready for work and listen to the radio. I am also meeting up with my friend Jeff who I have known since "A" school. We were at the same school house. He is a Builder aka carpenter, and I a SW aka Steelworker. We went to different battalions, but we both ended up with orders to San Diego. Not the same command but ended up running into each other and we quickly became friends again. It helps to have someone going through the same things as you. We have had plenty of talks about getting out of the Navy. And this Friday we are going to this bar in O'side to see Hillside Strangler, a punk band. My first one. It will go well with the crazy hair and nose piercing. My roots have already starting to show so I got some more dye and was getting high off hair dye tonight too. But its still the same crazy vibrant red. We are also meeting up for dinner tomorrow at one of my favorite resturants Applebee's. LOVE IT.
Okay I am off to bed now. I will write more soon

No more green doors in the morning...

Please click on the link below for the full article...
Thank you to Mr. Hooter for emailing out the link to this article. Some one will get the boot which will drop the count down to 10. I hate having to hear the name of the person who is getting the boot. I would probably cry if it was my name called for the boot. But my plan is not to. My plan is to be the radio contestant winner and join the QMDC on the epic ride down the coast. I WANT TO BE NUMBER 1!!!!!!!!!! What an awesome birthday present would that be. My birthday is October 28th. Just four days after the end of the ride.... SO ALL I WANT FOR MY BIRTHDAY IS TO WIN THE RADIO CONTEST!!!!!!!!!!! What better way to celebrate then doing something you love with awesome people for such an amazing cause, who makes life changing opportunites for challenged athletes. The ride alone for everyone who particitpates is going to be life changing. I feel the training has been life changing for me so far.
Today is only Monday and is already dragging by. I hate that tomorrow I am not going to be able to listen to xx1090 AM. I have to go up to Port Hueneme tonight for a meeting being held tomorrow. I am going to try to download the video player I need. I have a MacBook. I am still working on trying to download our route maps onto my Garmin Edge 305. So this tells you how computer savvy I am.
I am also going to be missing my figure skating class. Besides my bike rides I hate missing my figure skating class. Luckly I can make up my figure skating classes on Saturdays. If you ever want some cool fun for you or the family go check out San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa. Or Ice Town in UTC Mall.
When I was listening to the radio today, I was able to find out why Scott Kaplan was not there. He was back in Flordia for his 20 year High School Reunion. August 15, 2009 is going to be my 10 year. It should be interesting.

August 17th, Recovery Ride...

Today was hard to get up. 5:30am came fast, after going to bed at 2am. Please read my previous post. I am happy today was a 35 mile recovery ride. This morning I had a new addition to my usual attire of spandex, jersey, and skirt... I had a short red lace tutu underneath my skirt. Thanks to Diane, and an idea on the San Clemente ride. I stopped and talked to Jeffery for a brief moment and delivered him his message from Valerie. Scott Kaplan was not there. Everyone was loving the tutu. I have to admit that I love wearing it... I LOVE MY TUTUS.
Today's immunity challenge was a quiz, on the Olympics. I really need to start watching TV. We only had 5 radio contestants today. Brent, Carl, Kris, Matt, Kevin and Todd. You will all missed today. Hope that you are back next Sunday. Scott won the pump again. You are the immunity pump master!

After a few announcements, the group leaders handed out some awards to a deserving member of their group. Group 4 had the husband and wife tandem team, but who don't ride tandem Bob and Julie receive the award today. YEAH BOB AND JULIE, you two are awesome. I love riding along side and talking to you both. Then we all sang Happy Birthday to the ever amazing Kristine. She sends out all the emails, sets up the training rides... I really don't think there is nothing she can't do. She is a super hero in disguise.

Then the ride started. At our SAG stop, I was further encouraged by my wonderful group. THE FABULOUS GROUP FOUR. to loose the black skirt and just bare the tutu...
So the Wonderful SAG lady TINA, she let me put my skirt in the SUV. And I finished the ride without it. We were cruising along at a really good pace... I didn't have my GPS, so I couldn't tell you what we were at. I love talking to everyone on Sunday. Sunday rides are something I love and look forward to all week long. When we got back to the Flower Hill Promenade, Julie was telling me that my tutu caused us to have a tag along. And when everyone from group four came back Mr. Hooter had a girls only surprise. It was a pink tire lever... OMG, I don't have one yet! Thank you Mr. Hooter, I will love you forever now.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KRISTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Dammit, that is the third time we have been passed by the ballerina girls!"

Awe Midnight Madness, and tutus. Which is a 20 mile bike ride through downtown San Diego. At 8pm on Saturday August 16, we went and signed up. By 9pm we were home with tutus in hand from The Crypt getting dressed to join in the fun. By 9:30pm we were back out the door and headed downtown. We took part in the costume contest. The winners were on a tandem and it was set up as a bed, that said just married, bottles tied to the back and the riders dressed as a bride and groom.
I was doing some people watching, and I saw a bike jersey with the QMDC logo. I just had to go up to this lady wearing the jersey. I asked her if she was taking part in the ride this year. She said she was unsure and that she did part of the ride the first year. She was on the massage team. Her name is Valerie. Then asking about Jeffery, the CAF Director and Scott Kaplan. Valerie says hi to you both. Also asking me how I was involved with the QMDC. I told her about the radio contest.

Finally midnight came... The riders were sent off in waves. But it did not help. To many people on the bikes did what they wanted and ignored the rules of the road. Jeanna got behind me and We worked our way through the mess and as soon as we would get a good pace, we would meet up with the next group. But as zooming along, many people noticed the tutus flying by. Some guys were not to happy and others cheered was on. We both got hit on by a couple of guys, we had a few near misses. And one biker down...ME I was stopped at a light and there was a biker to my left about 3 feet away and 5 bikers flew between us and I ended up falling over . My chain fell off and my seat post turned. Someone at the light helped with my chain. I got my pretty new bike shoes dirty :( No bumps, bruises, or blood though. We came into the finish about 1:30am. And then it was off to home for I needed to go to bed and get up at 5:30am for my 35 mile recovery ride with QMDC.

My First Spin Class...

Today I was able to take part in my first spin class. The QMDC has private spin classes with The Sporting Club. A very luxurious gym and spa. I got there and went to the front desk to sign in. The pointed me to the locker room, and how to use the locks. This place is so nice. It does not feel like a gym what so ever. The locks are digital and you can put your own code in it. It was confusing me... The 10% smarter rule, I know. So I went back out and got instruction on it again. Then I was off to the spin room. I had been the first one there and had all the bikes to choose from. So I picked my lucky number 7. Also it is right up front. So I head off to the Annex, where the spin room is. I walk into the building and its a gym looking like under renovations. Then I see this blue lighting in a room, I think oh go check it out. And to my surprise its the spin room. But no one else was there, so I go back to the front desk and wait. Finally I make my way back to the cool blue room and find lucky number 7. Today class was lead by Kris. He was inspired by the Olympics, so our work out reflected it. It had some flats, climbs, and sprints. It was really good. I loved it. I am ready to go back next Wednesday. There was about 8 people there total. And we worked up a sweat. It got hot in there real quick. I don't think I have sweated that much in a Navy PT in a long time.
And for Thursday we are having a nutrition class from Mr. Pat Jack

For My Mommy

You know you’re a Navy Mom when…

1. Your last good night’s sleep was 6 months before she left for bootcamp. September 2000
2. You have finally resigned yourself to the fact that Navy mail is delivered seasonally rather than daily. I still have mail I never received

3. Your Sailor gives you ironing tips. Starch works wonders.
4. Your Sailor's version of pneumonia is “It’s just a cold, I’m fine.” We try to avoid the cure all (see number 5)
5. You realize the Navy's cure-all is Motrin. Vitamin M
6. The mere word “deployment” has you on the phone refilling your Xanax. Too many countries to count.
7. You can’t quite figure out what non-Navy mothers worry about.
8. You finally realize that Drill Instructors are not the anti-Christ and are more like heroes. This one goes for Simon.
9. You’ve mailed at least a few packages that have been on around-the-world tours. Sometimes whats inside is beyond recgonization
10. You forgot there were TV stations other than Fox News. OIF
11. You find yourself bragging to friends about your Sailor's accuracy with an M-16. And many more
12. You will get in a high speed chase just to catch up with someone’s Navy bumper sticker.
13. When everything in your closet has Navy Mom on it and if it doesn’t, you put pins and yellow ribbons on it. And blue star pins
14. When you recognize the haircut and ask if you can have a hug because your daughter is deployed. That is what Patsy was for
15. When you don’t mind watching military movies even though you hated them growing up.

16. You tell your nephews they need a “high and tight”.
17. You and your <a class="kLink" id="KonaLink4" style="BORDER-RIGHT: transparent 0px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px! I just got up to go listen to xx1090 The Scott and BR Show. Tuesdays are the elimination days. What a dreaded morning for all on the radio contest. We started with 30. The first cut knocked the group down to 15 and now its been one person a week. The first person to go was Raymond. Then we had to say farewell to Mike. And last week we said farewell to Greg.
The thing is we really don't know what to do to win this. From what we were told back in the beginning, make the Sunday rides your priority, give your all when riding, have fun, talk with people. Listen to the radio, help others out... And the judges, we don't know who they are. (I just tried to listen to the radio station live on the computer, but I have a Mac...and it doesn't play it. I going to have to do some research to try to make it work. Thankfully the roomie has a desktop with windows. So I don't have to go sit in my car and listen to the radio.)

Today is the 6th Annual All American Golf Classic at Camp Pendleton. Which Benefits the Semper Fi Foundation and the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Both are amazing Foundations that do amazing things for people.

Its 6:37am and Scott just announced that the cyclist elimination is coming up. It hard to listen to the radio and not feel the butterflies in your stomach. I wonder if all the other radio contestants feel the same way on Tuesday Mornings. Monday nights start to drag and Tuesday mornings the time can't pass fast enough. You get upset when someone wants to something from you while you are listening because you don't want to miss a word that is said. We have no clue who is going to be cut until Tuesday. As I am sitting here listening, I am like hurry up already Scott just get to it. All the riders are amazing people with amazing stories. Each one of us has a different stories and different lives. And talking to everyone, learning about them. You grow friendships with them that are going to last a lifetime.

A former Marine is being cut.... Its now 11, Kevin Davenport is being cut. Scott Bailey is on the radio... Kevin, its sad to see you go. You have given me alot of good information about things I can do during my transition from the Navy into civilian life. Thank you for your honorable service in the Marine Corps. You are looked up to by many people. Good luck to you. We will miss you.

More to come

Last Day...

Today marked my last day at CBMU 303, having to wear camo, steel toe boots, gold shirts, and blue shorts, brown t-shirts. I was not feeling good and needed the rest. I missed seeing everyone. Talking to everyone about their week and upcoming plans. I called the radio station on Friday morning and to my surprise I got through. Every other time I have called I just got a busy signal.
This coming Wednesday I get to attend my first spin class with the QMDC. I am very excited to get out there and join in the buzz that some of the riders keep talking about.

Looking forward to getting back in the saddle on Sunday.

You might be a cyclist if....

1. You have more water bottles than you have drinking glasses.
4. You have more cycling jerseys than work shirts.
5. Your cycling jersey IS your work shirt.
6. Your hands have a strange tan that looks remarkably similar to the pattern on your cycling gloves.
20. Weather forecasts can be broken down into 2 categories: good biking weather, bad biking weather.
21. You put your bicycle in your car, and the value of the total package increases by a factor of 4 (or better).
22. You spend 2X the money on cycling wear that you do work clothes.
24. You can tell your wife with a straight face that it's too hot to mow the lawn, then bike off for a century.
25. You dream of winning the lottery and the first thing you think of is how many/which bikes can I buy?
26. You buy a car based on whether or not a bike will fit in the trunk/back, with the rear seat folded down.
27. Your bike sleeps with you in the living or bedroom.
30. You wear a heart rate monitor during sex.
31. You check out all other guys/girls legs to see if they are better than yours.
32. Your spouse can't take it anymore and takes up cycling.
33. You wonder why a $500 bike has 24 gear ratios, while a $20,000 car or truck only has 4.
34. You crash...and insist on getting to the bike shop to have your bike checked out BEFORE going to the hospital.
35. You can't seem to get to work before 8:30am, but you don't have a problem meeting your buddies at 5:30 am for a ride.

Well I have already have been slacking on this thing... I guess it will take time getting used to. I took my bike into the shop for a tune up. I want to get it painted but that will take three weeks. Something I don't have with the QMDC going on.
Ah the QMDC, what is that you ask??? Its an amazing 7 day, 600 mile bike ride from San Francisco to San Diego. 600 miles... YES 600 miles. I know you all think I am nuts. But with all the proper training being received, it will be unforgettable. And the best part of it all is that all the money raised is going to benefit the Challenged Athlete Foundation.

The Challenged Athlete Foundation helps people with disabilities play sports. They offer grants, training, coaches, resources. Everything a disabled athlete needs the CAF is there to help.

So, how did I get involved? I was on the Trek Store website and saw a little advertisement for the QMDC and it said to click here to win a spot. So I first used google to find out what QMDC really is. Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge. Is 100 riders raising at least $10,000 each for the CAF. And to end the fundraising they take this epic 600 mile bike ride.

So to win a spot on this QMDC... Scott and BR, from xx1090 have decided for a second year to put together a cycling team and one person from the cycling team will win a spot on the QMDC. Each entry had to write in 50 words or less why they want to be a part of the QMDC.

I checked the deadline... May 31. I thought why not. What is the worst thing that could happen I get picked for the cycling team and don't win the contest. But I will gain from it a whole lot more. A couple of days after submitting my essay, I get an email saying I was selected as a member of the Scott and BR cycling team. I was in shock.

Right now we are into 11th week of training. The ride is going to take place from October 18-24. Each week I find myself getting stronger and looking forward to every Sunday, when I get to ride with the team. Some rides are more of a challenge then others, but if they were all easy what would we get out of them.

That is all for now... I will have more later on today...

what is all the hype about....

What is all this blogging hype about? Its an online journal really where you can share with the world... Better be careful of what you write then. So I have started to join the blogging world and see how it goes. I have never been able to journal for more then a couple of days. I wonder how long this will last then?
There are a few guys from the XX1090 radio show contest with the CAF that are doing this, so why not get yet another perspective on the QMDC, CAF, and XX1090 contest. I am not very good with computers so this will be a learning experience on how to put up pictures and everything else. I can't even figure out how to up load maps onto my Garmin Edge 305 yet.

More to come....
